Stop Dreaming Of Becoming A Writer; You’re Already There!

Dream of being a writer?

If you answered yes, that may be your biggest obstacle in achieving your goal. Don’t dream it, be it!

I’m serious. I made that mistake for a long time. It was only when I took full ownership of the title, genuinely embracing the reality that I was already a writer, that it became my reality.

Studies suggest our minds don’t recognize when we’re just visualizing something versus actually experiencing it. This explains why time spent visualizing can help athletes score more goals, a business-person ace the big meeting, and the speaker nail the engagement. Have you ever heard folks suggest that you ‘fake it ’til you make it,’ or ‘dress for the job you want, not the one you have’? The same idea

Have you ever heard folks suggest that you ‘fake it ’til you make it,’ or ‘dress for the job you want, not the one you have’? The same idea underlies these sage pieces of advice.

What does this have to do with your dream of being a writer? If you are dreaming it as your future reality, you’re telling your brain it isn’t your reality today – which I would like to suggest is a lie. Stop that! It isn’t nice to lie to your brain!

What? That’s not true, you don’t think you are a writer yet? Well, quit thinking such things right this minute!

Let me ask you this: Do you write? What is a writer doing?

Ahem, yes. Writing. So you are writing. You are a writer.

Do you see this for what it is? I’m not playing with semantics here, I want you to embrace that you are actively a writer. You may or may not be very good at it yet; you may or may not have had recognition for it yet, but you are already a writer.

I make this point because how you view yourself will go a long way toward how deeply you commit to showing up. If you accept you are a writer, you will find it simpler to embrace the behaviors and attitudes that will shape you into that writer.

It’s time you come out of the closet, time to own your writing super-power, so you can begin wielding it more powerfully. You don’t have to believe me – you can experiment. Try it out and see.

FOR TODAY: Spend a few minutes visualizing yourself as a writer. See yourself writing. See yourself acknowledging that you’re a writer 🙂 If you haven’t done so already, set up your writing space – make it sacred, special. This is the space you write in – honor it.

Commit to your writing time, too. You want to nail down the when and where of your writing – the place you will show up; the appointment the Muse knows you will keep. Remember, when you take your writing seriously, it takes you seriously. It may take a little while for it to trust you mean it when you say you’ll show up, but do it, and keep doing it, and you will reap the rewards. Whatever you do, though, never forget: You are already a writer. Own it. Live it. Be it.

Thanks for allowing me to share these few minutes of your time and mind-space.

Create an amazing day for yourself!
